From the fertility goddess figures of Paleolithic caves to Cleopatra's kohl by the Nile; from the ladies of the Heian-kyō court who blackened their teeth and powdered their faces, to the visages traced again and again across the silken pages of The Tale of Genji — the beauty of women has, across tens of thousands of years of firelight and dynastic rise and fall, been captured by generation after generation of artisans, poets, and artists in pigment, in lacquer, in silk thread and waka verse.

And yet what civilization has so carefully preserved is, almost without exception, the trace of "outer beauty" alone — the contour on the scroll, the curve in the porcelain glaze, the frozen profile of the ukiyo-e print. The moment the gaze turned toward those deeper, more private, more truthful realms of a woman's body, that gaze stilled, that passion faded.
